Goggles or glasses

Safety glasses shield the front and sides of the eye. Goggles seal all the way around it. That seal is the whole point, and it is what makes goggles the correct choice for anything airborne or liquid.

Dust, grinding debris, wood chips, chemical splash, pressure washing and spray application all call for goggles. Most sites need both on hand: glasses as the default, goggles for the specific tasks that demand a seal.

Venting decides what you are protected from

Non-vented goggles have no openings at all. Nothing gets in, including vapour and fine dust. They fog the fastest, and they are what you want for chemical vapour or fine powder.

Indirect vented goggles have baffled ports that let air move but block liquid on a straight path. This is the standard choice for chemical splash, and it is the version most sites should stock as their default.

Direct vented goggles have open holes. Good airflow, minimal fogging, and no splash protection at all. They suit dusty work with no liquid hazard, such as woodworking and dry grinding.

Getting this wrong is common. Direct vented goggles bought for a chemical process look right and protect against nothing that matters there.

Fogging is the real failure mode

A sealed goggle traps warm humid air against a cold lens, which is exactly the condition that causes fog. Anti-fog coating is not optional here the way it is on glasses.

Clean coated lenses with water and a microfiber cloth. Solvent cleaners and paper towel strip the coating within weeks. If a crew is fogging up constantly despite coated lenses, look at venting before you look at the lens.

Fit over prescription glasses

Most industrial goggles are cut deep enough to seal around a worker's own prescription frames. Check the depth on the product page if that matters for your crew, because a goggle that sits on the frame instead of sealing to the face protects nobody.
