29 CFR 1910.132: General PPE and the hazard assessment
What the standard requires. This is the umbrella rule for industry safety compliance. Paragraph (a) says protective equipment must be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever hazards call for it. Paragraph (d)(1) requires the employer to assess the workplace for hazards, and (d)(2) requires a written certification that the assessment was done. Paragraph (f) adds training, and (h) makes the employer pay for most PPE.
What you must supply and document. Your catalog should map to hazard categories, not just product types, because your customers build their written certifications from your spec sheets. Provide performance documentation for every SKU, and organize hand protection, eyewear, and head gear so a buyer can match each identified hazard to a specific product. 29 CFR 1926.95(c): The construction fit rule
What the standard requires. OSHA revised its construction PPE standard effective January 13, 2025. Paragraph (c)(1) requires PPE of safe design and construction for the work performed, and (c)(2) requires that it is selected to properly fit each affected employee. This aligned construction with the general industry rule, and it exists because ill-fitting gear, especially on smaller-framed workers, protects nobody.
What you must supply and document. Full size runs, period. A distributor who stocks gloves in large and extra large only is now a compliance risk to every construction customer they serve. Carry complete size ranges across hi-vis safety vests, gloves, and industrial coveralls, publish size charts, and flag which lines run small. 29 CFR 1910.133: Eye and face protection
What the standard requires. Employers must provide appropriate protection against flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, and injurious light radiation. Side protection is required where flying objects are a hazard, and workers who wear prescription lenses need eyewear that incorporates the prescription or fits over it. Paragraph (b) incorporates ANSI Z87.1 by reference, listing the 2010, 2003, and 1989 (R-1998) editions.
What you must supply and document. Every unit of protective eyewear you ship should carry the Z87 marking, and your product pages should say so plainly. Stock safety glasses with fixed side shields, sealed goggles for chemical splash, and over-the-glasses styles for prescription wearers. When a buyer asks which model satisfies a splash hazard versus an impact hazard, your team should answer from the spec sheet, not from memory.

29 CFR 1910.135: Head protection
What the standard requires. Workers get a protective helmet wherever falling objects can injure the head, and a helmet designed to reduce electrical shock wherever they work near exposed conductors that could contact the head. Paragraph (b) incorporates ANSI Z89.1 by reference, listing the 2009, 2003, and 1997 editions.
What you must supply and document. Under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, Type I helmets protect against top impact and Type II against lateral impact as well. Electrical classes matter even more for your utility and electrical accounts: Class G is tested at 2,200 volts, Class E at 20,000 volts, and Class C offers no electrical protection. Stock safety helmets and hard hats across both types and all three classes, and train your inside sales team to ask about electrical exposure before quoting. Selling a Class C vented cap into a utility account is the kind of mistake that ends relationships.

29 CFR 1910.138: Hand protection
What the standard requires. Employers must select appropriate hand protection when hands are exposed to skin absorption of harmful substances, severe cuts or lacerations, severe abrasions, punctures, chemical burns, thermal burns, and harmful temperature extremes. Paragraph (b) requires selection based on task, conditions, duration of use, and the hazards identified. Notably, this standard incorporates no ANSI standard by reference. It is performance based.
What you must supply and document. Because OSHA gives no scale, the market runs on ANSI/ISEA 105, which rates cut resistance from A1 to A9. Buyers use those ratings to justify their selections, so carry cut resistant gloves across the scale and label each product with its rating. Add impact resistant gloves rated under ANSI/ISEA 138 for oil, gas, and heavy equipment accounts, where back-of-hand injuries drive the spend.
29 CFR 1910.95: Occupational noise and hearing conservation
What the standard requires. Table G-16 sets the permissible exposure limit at 90 dBA as an 8-hour time-weighted average. At 85 dBA TWA, the action level, paragraph (c)(1) requires a continuing hearing conservation program. Paragraph (i)(1) requires employers to make hearing protectors available at no cost to every worker at or above the action level, and (j)(2) requires protectors that bring exposure down to at least 90 dBA TWA, or 85 for workers who have already shown a threshold shift.
What you must supply and document. Attenuation data on every SKU. A safety manager choosing between foam plugs and cap-mounted muffs has to show the math that gets a 97 dBA press operator under the limit, and your hearing protection documentation is where that math starts. The citations beyond PPE that shape your customers' orders
PPE standards are not what OSHA cites most. On the agency's FY 2025 most frequently cited list, fall protection in construction (29 CFR 1926.501) ranks first, Hazard Communication (1910.1200) second, Lockout/Tagout (1910.147) fourth, Respiratory Protection (1910.134) fifth, and machine guarding (1910.212) tenth. Those citations set your customers' shopping lists. A Hazard Communication program stands on its Safety Data Sheets, so chemical-resistant glove orders should reference the SDS for the substances involved. Lockout/Tagout programs pull padlocks, tags, and insulated gloves into the same purchase order. Questions about fall protection and walking-working surfaces reveal harness, anchor, and footwear needs. Common compliance mistakes we see in the field
After 30 plus years of supplying safety programs, the failure patterns repeat. These are the gaps that turn a routine compliance audit into a citation list:
- No written hazard assessment certification. The assessment happened, but nobody signed the paper. Under 1910.132(d)(2), the assessment only counts when the certification exists.
- One-size-fits-all stock after the fit rule. Since January 13, 2025, gloves and vests that only come in large and extra large leave every construction customer exposed.
- Uncertified marketplace gear. Eyewear without a Z87 marking or a helmet without a Z89.1 classification cannot support a compliance file, whatever the online listing claimed. - No training records. Paragraph 1910.132(f) requires training, and an undocumented session is indistinguishable from no session.
- A stale SDS library. Chemical inventories change with every new supplier, and a Safety Data Sheet binder that missed those changes fails the core purpose of the Hazard Communication standard.
None of these gaps requires an enforcement scare to fix. Here is an illustrative scenario, not a customer story. Consider a hypothetical 40-person fabrication shop. The National Safety Council puts the average cost of a medically consulted work injury at $48,000 in 2024, counting wage losses, medical expenses, administrative costs, and employer costs. Set that figure against the price of a certified glove program for the same crew, and the comparison ends quickly. Now add enforcement exposure. If an inspection follows the injury and the shop cannot produce its hazard assessment certification or training records, each serious violation carries a maximum penalty of $16,550 under the 2026 adjustment, and a willful or repeated violation reaches $165,514.
