Waterproof vs water-resistant: membranes and dipped coatings

The label matters more here than anywhere else in hand protection. A truly waterproof glove uses a membrane liner, a thin laminate barrier bonded between the outer shell and the inner lining. Water cannot pass through, but the glove still vents some sweat. Specify this construction for all-day snow, slush, and freezing rain.

A dipped coating is different. Fully dipped latex or nitrile gloves put a continuous rubber barrier over the whole hand, which sheds water well and grips wet material better than almost anything else. One rule from OSHA's layering guidance carries straight into gloves: avoid cotton, because it loses its insulating value once wet. Synthetics and wool keep working damp.

Heated work gloves: when batteries earn their keep

Heated work gloves put thin heating elements across the back of the hand and fingers, powered by rechargeable batteries in the cuff. They solve one problem: low-activity cold. A worker moving material all shift generates heat. A flagger, crane operator, surveyor, or inspection tech standing still for hours does not, and that is where battery heat earns its price.

Buy them with open eyes. Runtime drops as output rises, so a glove that lasts a full shift on low may give a couple of hours on high. Batteries add cuff bulk, need a charging routine, and raise the price several times over a standard insulated glove. Reserve heated pairs for roles that genuinely stand still, and give everyone else a warmer conventional system first.

The dexterity trade-off and the liner glove system

Every millimeter of insulation costs you feel. Push warmth too far and workers pull the gloves off to do fine work bare-handed, exactly the exposed-skin scenario OSHA warns against. The fix used by cold-climate crews everywhere is a layered system: a thin liner glove under a roomier insulated shell.

The liner does three jobs. It adds a trapped-air layer, it wicks sweat off the skin, and it keeps a barrier on the hand during fine-motor tasks when the shell comes off. Liners with touchscreen-compatible fingertips let workers run tablets without stripping to bare skin. NIOSH advises workers to carry extra gloves, and liners make that practical: swap a damp liner for a dry one at break time and the system resets. Cheap insurance, sold by the dozen.

Sizing when you layer

A layered system only works if the shell is sized for it. A glove that fits perfectly over bare skin becomes a tourniquet over a liner, and OSHA's guidance is blunt: tight fitting clothing reduces blood circulation, and warm blood keeps extremities warm. A compressed glove also flattens its own insulation, so the tight glove is the cold glove twice over.

The practical rules:

  • Fit the liner snug, like a second skin, with no bunching at the fingertips.
  • Fit the shell one size up from the wearer's normal glove size when a liner lives under it.
  • Check for a pinch of free air at the fingertips and easy fist closure with the liner on.

Cold plus hazard: when winter meets cut, impact, and traffic

Winter does not suspend the rest of the hazard list. Care and drying: make the pair last the season
